Brandi Carlile 好みの音楽のジャンルが、ポップ、ロック、カントリー、フォークのうちどれかに入る人なら、僕がそうだったように．Brandi Carlileがきっと好きになるのではないかと思います。彼女の音楽はその全てのジャンルを混ぜ合わせたようなアーティストです。 Brandi Carlileの2枚目となるThe Storyは、フォーク・ロックの演奏に重なるカントリー的な素晴らしい歌唱力だけでなく、アーティスト／ソングライターとしての円熟した面も聴かせてくれるアルバムです。 一番はじめのミッドテンポ曲"Late Morning Lullaby" のイントロのギターの部分を聴いたときは、一瞬ジョン・メーヤーのような売れ線ポップ・ロック志向かなと、思いました。ところが、彼女のスムーズなファルセットの歌が入ってきたとたんに、そのオリジナリティーを見せ付けられるのです。
"Have You Ever" のような曲では、トラディショナルなヨーデルスタイルのヴォーカルによって、カントリー色が濃くでていますが、惑わされてはいけません。彼女は確実にロックなのです。僕が好きなのは、タイトル曲の“The Story”で、セカンドバァースからBrandiの歌が劇的に一オクターブジャンプすると同時に、怒涛のようなロックバンドがドラムとギターをブンブン言わせて入り込んで来ます。 このアルバムには"Josephine" や "Canonball"のようなフォーク調のメローで美しい歌も入っています。特に"Canonball" は、「あなたに出会った時に私は生まれた／今私は死ぬほどあなたを忘れようとしている」という、悲しい歌で、彼女がこの歌詞を歌うと、なんだかその気持ちがわかるような気がしてしまうのです。 Brandi Carlileは、説得力のある「ストーリー」を歌う、若くて素晴らしい才能を持ったアーチストだと思います。 ティモシー・K・マキ（2007年5月02日：ロサンゼルス）
TIM’S MUSIC REVIEW (5/02/2007) Pop. Rock. Country. Folk. If your favorite music fits into any of those categories like it does for me, then you’re going to love Brandi Carlile because she’s a talented mix of all of them. Brandi Carlile’s sophomore album The Story displays not only her amazing country voice set against a folk/rock background, but also shows her maturation as an artist and song-writer. You’d think with Carlile’s opening guitar intro on the mid-tempo first track “Late Morning Lullaby” that she sold out to the commercial pop/rock sounds of John Mayer. But as soon as her smooth falsetto comes in you know that the song is all her own. In songs like “Have You Ever” Carlile has a strong voice made for country with its traditional yodeling and sliding delivery. But don’t be confused; this album quite literally rocks. In my favorite track, “The Story,” the booming guitar and drums of a furious rock band kicks in at the start of the second verse as Carlile’s voice does a dramatic octave jump. At the same time, The Story has beautiful mellow touches of folk in songs like “Josephine” and “Canonball.” “Canonball” in particular has pure, heartbreaking lyrics. And when Carlile sings, “I was born when I met you/Now I’m dying to forget you,” you seem to be able to understand.
